Summary

The M60 became one of the defining American main battle tanks of the Cold War. For three decades it served with the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps and with numerous NATO, Allied and affiliated nations.

More than 15,000 vehicles of the M60 family were built over its long production life, and the platform proved exceptionally adaptable, rugged and capable of modernization.

Developed from the M48 lineage and armed around the 105 mm M68 gun, the M60 entered service at the beginning of the 1960s.
The M60A1 replaced the original M60 on the production line in 1962 and became the principal version of the M60 family throughout the 1960s and 1970s, remaining a highly recognizable symbol of Western armored power.

This M60A1 is finished in the distinctive MERDC Red Desert camouflage scheme, part of the family of camouflage patterns developed by the U.S. Army during the Cold War.

MERDC (Mobility Equipment Research and Development Center) introduced adaptable four-color patterns intended to break up the recognizable silhouette of military vehicles.

The Red Desert variation was intended for dry, arid terrain with reddish and ochre-colored soil. Its combination of Earth Red and Earth Yellow, complemented by smaller areas of Sand and Black, makes it one of the most visually striking MERDC schemes.

Compared with the familiar, green-dominated patterns, Red Desert was much less common.
