History

The Continental AOSi-895-5M represents one of the most advanced developments in the family of post-war American air-cooled tank engines. Designed and built by Continental Motors Corporation, this six-cylinder, horizontally opposed, supercharged and fuel-injected gasoline engine was developed in the early 1950s to power a new generation of lightweight armored vehicles for the U.S. Army.

Derived from the wartime AOI- and AOS-series engines used in vehicles such as the M18 Hellcat and M24 Chaffee, the AOSi-895 introduced significant improvements in power output, reliability, and efficiency. With a displacement of nearly 15 liters (895 cubic inches), it delivered up to 500 horsepower, making it one of the most powerful air-cooled engines of its class. The “i” in its designation refers to fuel injection, while the “S” denotes its supercharged configuration; a combination that gave it excellent throttle response and high performance in all climates.

The AOSi-895-5M was most notably fitted to the M41 Walker Bulldog light tank, the M42 Duster self-propelled anti-aircraft gun, and the M44 self-propelled howitzer. These vehicles were used extensively by U.S. and allied forces throughout the Cold War, and many remained in service well into the 1980s.

Engines of this type were overhauled at major U.S. depots such as Red River Army Depot (RRAD), ensuring military-grade rebuild standards.
